Thankyou so much for your support! Having surpassed our second target of $2,000, we are thrilled to confirm we will use the funds to perform the following:
• Print and post posters and flyers to hospitals, child health nurses and family planning clinics across Western Australia, to enable all families to be aware of and access the support Tiny Sparks WA provides.
• Provide a grant to Parents of Prems to provide one months worth of care packages to families with micro and extremely premature babies.
• Develop workshops specific to the needs of our community.
We have now set our third goal of a further $1,000. This will be used to implement the workshops noted above and the development of other support programmes.
Our vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of mothers enduring high risk pregnancies, newborns requiring the neonatal intensive care unit or special care nursery, and the communities supporting them in Western Australia.
In Western Australia in 2011: 2,757 babies were born pre-term (before 37 weeks); 9.8% of all babies born required the care of a Level 3 or Level 2 Special Care Nursery; and there were 332 perinatal deaths.
The rate of anxiety, post natal depression and post traumatic stress is significantly higher in mothers who have endured a high risk pregnancy and/or have had a baby in special care. Post the perinatal period, the ongoing follow-up appointments and concern over their child’s health and development issues, all place a heavy toll on the wellbeing of families.
